Names, Signs and Tokens

In God’s wisdom, sacred covenants are accompanied by names, signs and tokens. As discussed above, these are symbols we will be required to present to sentinels guarding the way to the tree of life. They signify degrees of progression in following the perfect example of Jesus Christ; the pattern he followed in working out his salvation and exaltation. They serve as an indicator of our progression in attaining knowledge through righteous striving to imitate our exemplar.

The name associated with the covenants of obedience and sacrifice in the temple is of ancient origin, reminding us of our pre-mortal identity. (Brigham Young as cited in Holzapfel, Richard Neitzel and Seely, David Rolph, My Father’s House, p. 219-20)

The sign is a symbol of the means or the act by which we enter into specific covenants. In this case, the sign reminds us of promises made prior to entering mortality and renewed in the temple.

The token is a symbolic representation of the degree to which our faithfulness binds us to God at a point in time. As one enters mortality, the certainty of proving faithful by keeping sacred covenants is tenuous and unsure. As such, this first token reflects a degree of unsteadiness in securing God’s precious promises and binding oneself to the Lord.

These key words, signs and tokens demonstrate that we kept our first estate and entered into mortality after making sacred covenants to obey and sacrifice. They represent our progression in taking the first steps on the path that will bring us back into the presence of God.
